New research suggests that patients who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing these medications must be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Experts believe the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something activating and you become ravenous," said a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
