The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
